The Legal Software-Savvy Paralegal

Paralegal Technology

Every career uses career-specific technology. It is just part of business. Can you think of a business that doesn’t, at least, have a computer? Probably not. The paralegal industry is no different. If you are a paralegal, or if you want to be a paralegal, you must acquaint yourself with the software that is used in the legal community.  This is called legal or paralegal technology.

As …we have mentioned, before, paralegals are employed by many non-traditional employers. Law firms, considered traditional employers of paralegals, employ most paralegals. There are large firms and small firms. There are technologically progressive law firms and technologically archaic law firms. If you want to increase your value as a professional with expertise in paralegal technology, research the computer software that is used in a firm and, if possible, receive training prior to applying for a position…particularly if you are a career changer trying to break into the field. You may be clueless as to what legal software is used in a law firm. There are computer systems used for E-Discovery; case management; document management; analysis and research; and, word processing, to name a few. Who is going to use these systems? Most probably the paralegal or legal secretary will.

A paralegal that has relevant technological training is valued by an employer. If you are not employed in a position which requires paralegal technology but would like to be, you may want to take some time to research some of the most common legal software systems. Contact large law firms and ask, for example, what case management system they use. Then, contact the vendor to see if they provide training. If you work in a firm, your employer may provide the training.

Paralegal technology is constantly changing, and it is important to stay current. It may be possible to take a refresher course, or to have the vendor come to the firm and give on-site training. A successful paralegal technologist will look for ways to sharpen skills. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of opportunities provided by your employer or by those who want to sell a product. There are many software companies vying for the attention of law firms. Take advantage of that.  Paralegals with a Litigation Specialty are particularly in demand by employers who utilize paralegal technology in their legal practices.

The most important thing we are trying to get across, today, is to be aware of what paralegal technology is being utilized in the law firm or law-related office that you want to be a part of. Do your homework and set yourself up for success.
